Critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, violin/violist Mary Ramsey of the 10,000 Maniacs appears for a live stream performance that will explore jazz standards, gypsy jazz, the classical music repertoire as well as Mary Ramsey’s original compositions.  Mary Ramsey will be joined by Marc Rosen on guitar, Stu Weissman on guitar, and Ed Croft on bass.

BIOGRAPHY:

The indie-rock world may know her as the vocalist for the post-Natalie incarnation of 10,000 Maniacs, but the violist, violinist, vocalist, and songwriter has had a long and distinguished career aside from that group playing jazz, classical, and folk music.

Mary Ramsey was born in Washington D.C.  She has been playing the violin since age 5, has worked with the Erie Philharmonic, founded the Lexington String Trio.  Mary has been performing in her critically acclaimed folk duo, John and Mary. She continued to expand her musical horizons when she stepped up to the plate and replaced Natalie Merchant in 1995 as the lead singer and songwriter of 10,000 Maniacs.

She brought the band back in the spotlight with her top 40-hit “More Than This”. In addition to writing and singing with 10,000 Maniacs, she played both viola and violin, touring the world with the band, even playing for troops in Kuwait and Bahrain. Mary has also performed in various orchestras across the country, along with her recent contributions as performer and music director at the Irish Classical Theater.

The Hot Club of Buffalo is the region’s premier Gypsy Jazz Band.  The band pays homage to the music of Gypsy Jazz greats Guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli with influences from artists like Bach, Jimi Hendrix, and Steely Dan and rhythms from styles like Bossa Nova, Choro, and Rhumba.

What is Gypsy Jazz?

The Hot Club of Buffalo plays a brand of jazz known as Gypsy Swing. It’s also called Gypsy Jazz. The style was created in the 1930s by the legendary 2-fingered guitarist, Django Reinhardt. Gypsy Jazz blends American big band swing with exotic European Gypsy sounds.

The music is performed entirely on acoustic instruments. The rhythm guitar takes the place of a drum set. The guitars, strings, and even the picks are specially chosen to get that unique gypsy sound!

The Hot Club of Buffalo members are:

Kevin O’Brien – Bass

Joshua Assad – guitar

Dean Gionis – guitar

E.J. Koeppel – violin

FREE EVENT - We Are All Connected (Zoom)

Thursday, October 22nd at 7:30pm

October 22, 2020 7:30 pm

In this time of COVID-19, it has become increasingly apparent that we are all reliant on each other.  To that end, MusicalFare will be having a roundtable discussion with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and white cast members of SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE, RAGTIME and VIOLET.  Subjects and outcomes will include:

·         Deeper understanding of the themes, characters, and storytelling in Smokey, Ragtime, and Violet from the perspectives of BIPOC

·         The different perspectives of white and BIPOC actors performing (in the case of SMOKEY JOE'S) music that was written by white composers but who's seminal performances were often by BIPOC artists

·         The through line of all of us, especially in these unprecedented times, being connected and how that resonates, or doesn't resonate, in the RAGTIME and VIOLET stories

·         The sharing of our collective creative processes

·         A conversation about race in the Buffalo performing arts ecosystem

·         Increased visibility and cultural capital as three-dimensional artists and thinkers

·         The creation of works about the BIPOC experience by non BIPOC writers (SMOKEY - Lieber/Stoller, RAGTIME - Ahrens/Flaherty and VIOLET-Tesori/Crawley) and what that says about the business of Broadway and Theatres in our country.

·         Conversely, how frequently are actors of color given the opportunity to perform work written and composed by people of color for white audiences?

·         Additional text-to-world connections with these productions and historical events/movements

The roundtable will be moderated by Thembi Duncan, Director of Arts Engagement and Education at Shea’s Performing Arts Center.  www.thembiduncan.com

Saranaide’s “So Brasil Bossa Nova” has performed before a wildly enthusiastic sold-out audience of 250 plus people.  We are now presenting to you this special show at Live From Premier Cabaret Lounge!

BIOGRAPHY:

Saranaide is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, and musician based out of Buffalo, NY.  With parents from Panama and Puerto Rico, Saranaide has dipped into her DNA to embrace and celebrate the pulses and sounds of Latin America; exploding on the Buffalo Jazz Scene with new vigor.  Inspired by the legends of soul and jazz riding on the rhythms of the world, Saranaide’s unique sound is sweet honey dripping over a spicy stew.

A lifelong learner, she has traveled the world to better inform her process – whether it is studying Maracatu in Canada and Brazil or traveling to Ghana to immerse herself more fully in West African drumming & dance, Saranaide beautifully blends and reflects her Afro-Latino roots. She writes in both English and Spanish, most recently adding Portuguese to her singing repertoire. Her songwriting is universal and highly personal; her stage presence ethereal and earthy, wrapping her audience up in each story told through her sultry vocals, willowing flute, and jazzy guitar riffs.

She began her musical journey learning the piano at the age of 4. She picked up the flute in grade school and played in various ensembles and bands throughout her life. Her musicality sparked her interest in teaching herself guitar (and later ukulele) for church services, where she spent most of her youth building the foundation for her practice. Saranaide also sings with the Buffalo Afrobeat Orchestra and is passionate about her work as a birth doula.

The most notable performances of her career were being a guest of the Brooklyn College Choir in 2018 to perform two sold-out nights at Carnegie Hall with Joe Hisaishi in a symphonic concert that performed the music from the Studio Ghibli films of Hayao Miyazaki, wowing a sold-out crowd at Hotel Henry with a night of bossa nova, and enthralling the crowd at the Northwest Jazz Festival in an intimate performance in the Peace Garden.  She recently opened also for the Juno Award-winning and Grammy Nominated Jane Bunnet and Maqueque.  Saranaide also entertained nearly 500 people at the recent Hotel Henry Summer Jazz Series.

The Philippe Lemm Trio is continually proving to be one of the most exciting and electrifying jazz trio’s around today. Led at the helm by drummer Philippe Lemm, the group met in New York in 2011, and after one session together, realized that their undeniable chemistry was one that needed to be taken and shared with the world.  The Philippe Lemm Trio consists of Philippe Lemm – drums, Angelo Di Loreto – piano, and Jeff Koch – bass.

BIOGRAPHY:

Comprised of three musicians with an exceptional command of their instruments, the group’s repertoire draws heavily from re-imaginations of jazz standards in a way that both defies genre and corresponds to any modern jazz fan. The group uses their trust and understanding of one another’s musical tendencies to create passionate musical soundscapes, which range from traditional jazz to the progressive rock/classical-influenced music.  Hearing the trio is a special and unforgettable experience, and you will be captivated after listening to one piece.  Their TV appearance on the TV-show Vrije Geluiden led to sold-out concerts throughout The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany on the first half of their European CD release tour.

The trio’s electrifying chemistry and creative re-imagination of standards, progressive rock/pop, and diversely influenced music have thrilled audiences at Blue Note (New York), North Sea Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival, Bimhuis (Amsterdam), Getxo Festival (Bilbao), Rockwood Music Hall (New York), Lofta (Vilnus) Tivoli (Utrecht, and Blue Frog (Mumbai).  and many other locales.

This special live-stream performance also represents a homecoming for WNY native Angelo Di Loreto who continues to impress internationally with commissioned work in compositions and arrangements.  Angelo was commissioned to arrange music for the Metropole Orkest, the Grammy-winning pops orchestra in the Netherlands.  Angelo was also a finalist in the 2012 Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition in the United Kingdom and is a three-time ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award winner.
